The Big Picture

Posted on Nov 5th, 2008 by Ohica : Dreamer Ohica

True that history has brought us a long way in these here "united" states.  But as I look at the election results I also see a blurb that says, "california bans gay marriage,"  I'm thinking, come on people, I thought it was time for change...  I open the link to find that it says that 7 out of 10 black voters voted for the ban while latinos and whites were split.  People are missing the big picture here.  How can you say that you want change when you keep doing things that cause others injustice?  How, especially, can those who have suffered through their own discrimination impose a similar fate to others?  Who is one citizen to say what another can do with his or her life?  It doesn't matter to me whether or not two gay people decide to get married, that's their choice.  It scares me how people are so eager to say no to something thing that would only cause the participants joy and glee, and yet embrace war and guns.   Things that always get someone killed, not sometimes, not on occassion: always.  "we need to protect ourselves," they say...protect ourselves from each other.  Is this what society is supposed to be?  Are we supposed to be so afraid that the only way to find solace is a device whose sole purpose is to end human life?  I wonder how many people have actually used a gun to protect his or herself....  We just seem to keep going backwards when we should move forward.  The time is now.  Live and let live.  Unless they are causing you or someone you cherish harm, let them be.

The Big Picture: the way things are is not the way things should be.  Life should not be this hard; the stuff that goes on inside your body is the complicated stuff... we just need to eat, sleep and have fun.

I wish I didn't care so much, so that I just wouldn't care.  But it just saddens me so.  I guess we still have a long long way to go.  Perhaps why I keep pulling away...

It is a very sobering thoughts to think of those statistics. But with new opportunity will come greater education and better understanding! I hate to single out races because I think it's counterproductive… but if we really have to, I believe that it's not because they can't put two and two together about struggle. I think it's merely because they may have been fighting one fight for so long, they have not yet had the opportunity to think of a two front war. I really do hope those numbers change… I really hope that marriage becomes a civil right instead of a selective opportunity.

A Californian here. I vote no on 8, which means that I am one of the few who thought that others should be allowed to live their lives the way that they wish to. With that said, it does not shock nor bother me that so many others see things differently than me. That is part of our freedom of speech. What surprises me more is that this proposition even made it on the ballot. Seeing as it was a ballot to, essentially, override a previous ballot that had already been passed.

What this does for me is tells me where most Californians stand on this issue. That's it. Nothing to get upset or concerned about. Ridiculing or getting upset at others for their choices will not help them to make different choices. The only way to help others to see the way that you see things is through sharing your view, and, most importantly, living them. This is the only way to change the world.
You must be the change you wish to see in the world. And if you are participating in finger pointing and blaming, then that is what you are creating in the world.

There is never anyone to get upset at, or point fingers at. There is only remaining true to yourself, and acting in accordance to that. People respect and have a tendency to follow others who have integrity. Not blaming others, but, instead,  working towards the accomplishing what he/she believes in. And that is why I believe Obama was elected. Integrity is the greatest of attributes. And Gratitude is always in alignment with integrity - the two most important characteristic anyone can display.

Just my humble opinion. ♥ ♥ ♥

I'm a Californian and I voted no on 8. Yesterday was a bady day for the fight for gay marriage. Florida, Arizona and Arkansas all passed bans. In Arkansas they banned gay couples from adopting children :(

But, I know in California a vast majority of people under 30 were against Prop 8. This means it's only a matter of time. Sometimes it takes a while for the prejudice to fade. This doesn't excuse it, but I really believe it's true. Obama was against Prop 8 too, which is awesome, especially since he will probably be appointing a few Supreme Court Justices. I also think gay people should just start using the word “married”. It's a word. It doesn't belong to anyone. It's an idea and no one can own it. Eventually there will be a mind-shift and equality will prevail. I believe that because history has shown it happen for so many others. It's just an uphill battle till then.
